UGA anticipates Monday closure as it urges students to go home ahead of winter storm

ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia is urging students to consider going home for the weekend as officials closely monitor a winter storm expected to bring hazardous conditions to the Athens area as well as most of metro Atlanta.

University officials said updated weather models show a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and possibly snow beginning Saturday afternoon and continuing into Sunday. Forecasts indicate a strong potential for significant ice accumulation, high winds and rapidly falling temperatures, raising concerns about dangerous travel and prolonged power outages.

Out of an abundance of caution, UGA encouraged students to leave campus after classes end Friday, if possible. The university said it anticipates being closed Monday but plans to provide an official update early Sunday afternoon regarding operations for Monday, Jan. 26.

Residence halls will remain open for students who choose to stay. However, officials said students may be consolidated into limited housing areas with emergency heat and meal service if power outages, water line breaks or other storm-related issues occur.

Dining halls and Campus Transit will operate on regular schedules unless weather conditions require changes. University libraries, the Tate Student Center, Ramsey Student Center and other recreational facilities are also expected to remain open, though hours may be adjusted.

UGA officials urged students, faculty and staff to monitor emergency.uga.edu and the university’s social media channels for updates. Extended campus locations were advised to follow local guidance.

Essential personnel may be required to report to work if the university closes, provided travel conditions are safe.

The university also encouraged the campus community to review winter weather preparedness resources, keep cell phones charged and ensure emergency contact information is up to date through UGA Alert.
